Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a type of physical disability affecting movements of the body parts and posture. This condition usually does not worsen with time but it is a permanent lifelong condition.

It occurs as a result of damage caused to the developing brain, either during pregnancy period or shortly after birth.

Cerebral palsy is usually characterized by alteration in body movement, muscle control, muscle tone, muscle coordination, reflex, posture and balance.

People affected with cerebral palsy are also commonly found associated with learning, speech, visual and hearing, epilepsy and intellectual impairments.

Relation Between Cerebral Palsy And TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)

Cerebral palsy patients are generally seen associated with functional involvement of the masticatory system and structural involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is due to the increase in spasticity of facial musculature. These conditions accelerate the onset of joint and muscle disorders affecting the orofacial region, characterized mainly by joint pain, clicking upon jaw movement, and irregular or limited mandibular jaw movement, thereby resulting in a condition referred as TMJD (TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER).  Children suffering with Cerebral Palsy are more prone to the development of temporomandibular joint dysfunction compared to healthy individuals.
