It’s not just for your wrinkles but a lot of other things.
It when given under an EMG study to the overactive muscles of Jaw motion, like Masseter at Temporalis at key places, it simply relieves TMJD in around 70% patients. It also helps therefore in correction of posture (refer what causes body pains), and hence in a lot of patients relieves body pains too.
Botox, it is a toxin which was found responsible during a sickness called as Botulism. It is a complex mix of proteins, which has an effect of decreased muscle activity on certain parts of the body. At higher doses it causes paralysis like Tetanus toxin but in an opposite manner. In short, it has an effect opposite to that of tetanus.
Relieving muscles around TMJ from over activity, takes away pressure from nerves underneath and therefore improves the posture. This corrects body pains.
The amount of botox that is given for correcting wrinkles is far higher than that given for curing TMJ/ Facial or body pains. Although in far higher doses ( 2000 units and above) like all agents used in Allopathy, the harmful effects can be seen including threat to life. At such low doses of 20-50 units, as used for curing body pains, harmful effects are unheard off. Still some minor effects may exist and is contraindicated in some Neuro muscular derangements etc.. Always give a detailed list of diseases that you suffer from to the doctor.
