Body Pains Treatment In India

PAIN is a highly unpleasant physical sensation caused by injury or damage or illness.

Different types of pains in body can be broadly classified into 3 types-

  • Short term pain or acute pain- Usually such pain subsides on its own or after some simple treatment. Eg. Ankle sprain pain
  • Long term pain or chronic pain- has huge impact on the person’s quality of lifein terms of work, relationship with family and friends, sleep etc. Eg. back pain.
  • Recurrent pain- pain that is intermittent (comes and goes). Eg. headaches.

Pain is experienced differently by different individuals. No two different people can experience pain in the same way. Pain may sometimes be experienced in one place or sometimes in several places. Any kind of pain experienced in your body, be it be either acute or chronic or recurrent pain, is an alarming signal that something is wrong in the body.

The Pain Mechanism

Pain may arise from any part of your body like-

  • Skin
  • Muscle
  • Ligaments
  • Joints
  • Bones (nociceptive pain)
  • Injured tissue (inflammatory pain)
  • Nerves (neuropathic pain)
  • Internal body organs (visceral pain)
  • Combination of these types of pain (mixed pain).

The Pain Mechanism

Numerous specialized nerve fibres carry the pain signal from the painful part of your body to the brain through the spinal cord. However, sometimes, the injury to the spinal cord or the brain tissue may itself give rise to the pain signal. Eg. Pain experienced after a stroke attack.

Pain signals from different body part which is carried via nerves is first processed in the spinal cord and then in the brain.Brain has various differentcenters. These centers are associated with anxiety, emotions, sleep, appetite and memory. Thus the type of pain experienced by each individual is different.

The brain then sends back the signals to the spinal cord, which can, in turn, either diminish or enhance the pain further. In cases of chronic pain, the cells present at the nerve endings, in the brain and spinal cord may become over-sensitized. This is called ‘wind-up’. This is the main reason why chronic pain doesn’t subside easily even after the cause of such pain is diagnosed and treated.

In other words, the body’s warning system becomes hypersensitive as aresult of chronic pain stimulus, and thus continues to produce increased pain sensation even though the cause for pain has subsided or have been treated.

Some types of pain are very complicated involving many different factors that make it difficult for identification the actual cause for the pain. However, if the cause of pain cannot be identified with the help of machines or different tests, doesn’t mean that the pain is not real.

There is always a definite cause for pain always which may at times cannot be identified with investigation machines or tests. Pain cannot be seen or measured, which presents a challenge to both, the patient as well as the doctor to correctly identify and treat the cause of pain.
